Black Elk Peak is a very high mountain. It is in South Dakota. It sits in the Black Hills. This peak is the highest natural point in South Dakota.

The mountain has a long history. The Lakota people call it Hiŋháŋ Káǧa. This name means "owl-maker." They thought the area was sacred. For a long time, the peak was called Harney Peak. This name honored a US General. Many Lakota people wanted a name change. They did not want to honor a man who hurt their people. In 2016, the name officially changed to Black Elk Peak. It honors a wise Lakota man. He was a medicine man named Black Elk.
