You can find it near the town of Burnsville in Yancey County. The mountain is protected by a state park and the Pisgah National Forest. It is a very important place for nature and for people to visit.

Long ago, the mountain was formed from rocks called gneiss and schist. These rocks were made from old sea deposits that changed over time. The mountain grew much taller during a time called the Alleghenian orogeny. Today, the soil on the mountain is dark brown and stony. It can feel sandy or like clay in different spots. The summit is covered in a thick forest of evergreen trees. Most of these are red spruce and Fraser fir trees.

The Cherokee people lived in this area for a long time. They called the mountain Attakulla. Later, European settlers called it Black Dome because it looked rounded. They eventually named it after Elisha Mitchell. He was a professor who explored the area in 1835. He found that this range was much higher than Mount Washington in New Hampshire. Elisha Mitchell died in 1857 while returning to check his measurements.

Weather at the top is very different from the lands below. It has a climate that is more like southeastern Canada. The summers are mild and the winters are long and cold. In January, the average temperature can be very low. The coldest temperature ever recorded there was -30 degrees Fahrenheit in 1985. Heavy snow often falls between December and March. The summit is also a very windy place.

Visitors can reach the top by following a paved trail. This trail goes through a forest of conifer trees. There used to be a stone observation tower on the peak. That tower was torn down in 2006. A new observation deck opened in January 2009 for people to use.

You can see beautiful wildflowers during the summer. You might even find wild blueberries or blackberries there. The mountain is a place of great beauty and history.
