The mountain is located on the border of Inyo and Tulare counties. It rises very high above the Owens Valley to the east. On the west side, the mountain is part of Sequoia National Park. The summit is also the end of the John Muir Trail.

The mountain is made of very hard granite rock. Long ago, hot molten rock rose under the ground. This rock cooled and became part of the Sierra Nevada Batholith. The Earth's crust is slowly being stretched in this area. This stretching causes the mountain to rise up on the east side.

A fault system helps push the mountain higher. Over millions of years, rivers and glaciers wore away softer rocks. This left the tough granite of Mount Whitney behind. This process created its jagged ridges and dome shape.

People have been exploring this peak for a long time. In 1864, scientists named it after Josiah Whitney. He was the state geologist of California. Some people called it Fisherman's Peak. This was the name used by three men who first reached the summit in 1873.

The Paiute people had their own name for it. They called it Tumanguya, which means "the very old man." They believed a Great Spirit once lived in the mountain. In 1904, a new trail was finished to help people climb it.

The weather at the top is very cold. This is called an alpine tundra climate.

Summer temperatures can change very quickly. They can go from below freezing to very hot. Very few living things can survive near the summit. One plant is the sky pilot. It is a cushion plant that grows low to the ground. You might also see a gray-crowned rosy finch bird.
