It covers almost all of Nevada and much of Utah. It also reaches into parts of California, Idaho, Oregon, Wyoming, and even Baja California in Mexico. This region is known as an endorheic watershed. This means the water here has no path to the ocean. Instead of flowing to the sea, water stays in the land. It might sink into the ground or flow into salty lakes.

The land has a unique shape called basin and range topography. This happens because the Earth's crust has been stretched and thinned over time. This stretching created many north-south mountain ranges. These mountains are separated by wide, flat valleys or basins. Because of these many mountains, Nevada is the most mountainous state in the country. The area includes many different heights. It goes from the low Badwater Basin in Death Valley to the high summit of Mount Whitney.

Many different kinds of living things call this place home. The Great Basin has several deserts and different types of forests. In the hot deserts to the south, you might see Joshua trees. In the colder areas to the north, you will find different plants. High in the mountains, you can find pine trees like the Great Basin bristlecone pine. Many animals live here, such as mule deer, mountain lions, and coyotes. You might also see golden eagles flying above or lizards on the ground.

People have lived in this region for a very long time. Indigenous groups have been here since at least 10,000 B.C. Early hunters lived in this area during the ice age. They followed animals like bison and even extinct mammoths. Later, different groups like the Great Basin Desert Archaic lived here. Today, many people live in cities like Reno or the Wasatch Front. Some roads, like US 50, are even called "The Loneliest Road in America."

Understanding the Great Basin helps us see how the Earth works. It shows how geology can shape an entire continent. The way the mountains and valleys sit tells a story of a stretching crust. It also shows how water moves in a closed system. Even without an ocean outlet, the land stays full of life. From the Great Salt Lake to the high alpine lakes, it is a place of constant change.
