It runs from the border of Idaho down to central Utah. These mountains mark the western edge of the Rocky Mountains. They also sit right against the Great Basin region. The name comes from the Ute people. In their language, "wasatch" means a mountain pass.

Many people live very close to these mountains. Most people in Utah live in the valleys just to the west. This area is called the Wasatch Front. Nearly 3 million people live in this strip of cities. The mountains help these people by providing water and timber. They also provide granite for building. Salt Lake City sits right between the mountains and the Great Salt Lake.

These mountains have a very interesting history. Long ago, tectonic plates moved under the land. This caused the earth to squeeze and change. This process created many faults in the ground. The Wasatch Fault is one of the most important ones. These faults even helped form the Timpanogos Cave. Today, the mountains are still growing because of these faults.

The mountains have many famous peaks. Mount Nebo is the highest point in the whole range. It has three peaks and sits at the southern end.

You can also see Mount Ogden and Ben Lomond in the north. The peaks are very rugged because old glaciers shaped them. Some places get more than 40 inches of snow every year.

Because of the snow, the Wasatch Range is a great place for fun. The snow is very dry and powdery. People call it "the Greatest Snow on Earth." There are 11 different ski areas in the range.

This great snow helped Salt Lake City host the 2002 Winter Olympics. People also visit the canyons to hike or climb rocks. Many trees like spruce and fir grow in these forests. You might even see sagebrush in the drier spots.
