This state is landlocked, which means it has no ocean nearby. It is part of the Four Corners area. Utah shares borders with Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico.

It also touches Wyoming, Idaho, and Nevada. The state is the 13th-largest in the country by area. However, it is not very crowded. It is the 11th-least densely populated state in the U.S.

Many different groups of people have lived here for a long time. Thousands of years ago, the Ancestral Puebloans and Fremont people lived on this land.

The Ancestral Puebloans even built homes by digging into mountains. Later, the Navajo and Ute people settled in the region. The name Utah likely comes from the Ute tribe. Some say it means "people of the mountains."

Spanish explorers arrived in the mid-1500s. They found the land to be very dry and harsh. Because of this, they did not stay to build large towns.

In the 1840s, a new group of people arrived. These were Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young.
