It sits mostly in southeastern California and southwestern Nevada. Small parts of the desert also reach into Arizona and Utah. This desert is part of a much larger North American desert system. It also includes the Sonoran, Chihuahuan, and Great Basin deserts. Of all these, the Mojave is the smallest and driest. Many people call it the "high desert" because of its elevation.

The land here has a very specific look and feel. It follows a pattern called basin and range topography. This means you will see many parallel mountain ranges and valleys. Some areas have huge hills of sand called dunes. There are also flat areas called playas where water used to sit. These dry lake beds often leave behind large amounts of salt.

One famous spot is Death Valley. This area holds the lowest elevation in all of North America. You might also see huge fans of dirt called bajadas around the mountains.

This desert has a very long and complex history. Millions of years ago, much of this area was under shallow water. The rocks here were formed in the sea. Over a long time, the earth's crust stretched and pulled apart. This movement helped create the valleys we see today. Between 240,000 and 10,000 years ago, large lakes like Lake Manly filled the valleys. As the climate changed, these lakes dried up. This left behind the dry desert environment we know now.

The weather in the Mojave can be very extreme. Summer days are often much hotter than 100 degrees Fahrenheit. In the winter, it can get very cold with strong winds. Most rain comes from storms moving east from the Pacific Ocean. These storms usually happen between November and April. Sometimes, big summer thunderstorms can bring heavy rain very quickly. These sudden showers can lead to dangerous flash floods.

The desert is also home to many useful minerals. People have found deposits of gold, silver, and tungsten here.

Many different living things call this dry land home. The Joshua tree is a very famous plant found only here.

You might also see cacti like the silver cholla or the prickly pear. Many people live in or visit the desert today. Las Vegas is the largest city in the Mojave.

Other people use the land for ranching or military training. Some people even visit old ghost towns from the mining days. It is a place where nature and people meet in a unique way.
