This desert works differently because of its weather. Most deserts are very dry for a long time. The Sonoran Desert has two different rainy seasons. This creates a mix of dry and wet times. This pattern helps many more plants grow here than in other deserts. In the lower parts, it stays warm all year. In the Arizona uplands, the rain is more regular.

Scientists have studied this land for a long time. In 1957, a man named Forrest Shreve wrote about the desert. He divided the area into seven different regions. He used the types of plants to name these regions. One region is the Lower Colorado Valley. Another is the Arizona Upland. He also named the Plains of Sonora and the Foothills of Sonora.

There are 350 types of birds living here. You can find over 1,000 types of native bees. There are also 100 types of reptiles and 20 types of amphibians. Even a tiny fly called Drosophila mettleri lives here. It has a special system to handle the heat.
