It covers parts of the United States and Mexico. You can find it in Arizona and California. It also stretches across the Mexican states of Sonora, Baja California, and Baja California Sur. Some people believe it is the hottest desert on Earth. This desert is special because it is very different from its neighbors.

This desert works differently because of its weather. Most deserts are very dry for a long time. The Sonoran Desert has two different rainy seasons. This creates a mix of dry and wet times. This pattern helps many more plants grow here than in other deserts. In the lower parts, it stays warm all year. In the Arizona uplands, the rain is more regular.

Scientists have studied this land for a long time. In 1957, a man named Forrest Shreve wrote about the desert. He divided the area into seven different regions. He used the types of plants to name these regions. One region is the Lower Colorado Valley. Another is the Arizona Upland. He also named the Plains of Sonora and the Foothills of Sonora.

Many unique living things call this desert home. The saguaro cactus is very famous. It only grows in the wild in the Sonoran Desert. You might also see the organ pipe cactus or the prickly pear. There are 350 types of birds living here. You can find over 1,000 types of native bees. There are also 100 types of reptiles and 20 types of amphibians. Even a tiny fly called Drosophila mettleri lives here. It has a special system to handle the heat.

People live in the desert too. The largest city is Phoenix, Arizona. It has about 4.7 million people. Tucson is another large city in Arizona. In Mexico, Mexicali and Hermosillo are also big cities. Many Native American tribes live in these areas. The desert is also a path for animals and people to move. It is a place where humans and nature live close together.

The Sonoran Desert is a vast, hot ecoregion located in North America.

It spans parts of the Southwestern United States and several Mexican states. In the U.S., it covers portions of Arizona and California. In Mexico, it includes Sonora, Baja California, and Baja California Sur. This desert is unique among its neighbors, such as the Mojave or Chihuahuan deserts. Some researchers assert that the Sonoran may be the hottest desert on Earth. It is part of the larger Sonoran floristic province within the Madrean region. This region belongs to the Holarctic realm of the northern Western Hemisphere.

What makes the Sonoran Desert truly distinct is its unique climate pattern. Most deserts experience long periods of dryness and extreme temperature shifts. However, the Sonoran Desert provides subtropical warmth during the winter months. It also features two distinct seasons of rainfall. This bi-seasonal pattern creates a constant contrast between aridity and moisture. In lower elevations, temperatures remain warm throughout the entire year. In the Arizona uplands, the rainfall is more regular, averaging between 100 and 300 mm annually. This moisture allows for a much higher variety of life than other arid regions.

The desert is divided into several specific sub-regions and ecological zones. In 1957, a researcher named Forrest Shreve published "Vegetation of the Sonoran Desert." He categorized the area into seven regions based on their characteristic plants. These included the Lower Colorado Valley, Arizona Upland, Plains of Sonora, and Foothills of Sonora. He also identified the Central Gulf Coast, Vizcaíno Region, and Magdalena Region. Many ecologists now view the Vizcaíno and Magdalena regions as a separate ecoregion called the Baja California desert. Other notable sub-regions include the Colorado Desert and the Yuma Desert.

Plants in the Sonoran Desert have evolved specialized adaptations to thrive. The bi-seasonal rain results in more plant species than any other desert globally. The saguaro cactus, or Carnegiea gigantea, is perhaps the most famous resident. It is the only place in the world where the saguaro grows in the wild. Other notable cacti include the organ pipe cactus and the prickly pear. Many plants belong to families like the agave, palm, and legume families.

Trees such as the velvet mesquite and palo verde are common on the slopes. The California fan palm is also found, specifically in the Colorado Desert section. This palm is the only species native to the United States.

The fauna of the desert is equally diverse and highly specialized. The region supports 350 bird species and over 1,000 species of native bees. It is also home to 100 reptile species and 20 amphibian species. Large animals like the bobcat, mule deer, and pronghorn antelope live here. More specialized animals include the Gila monster and the western diamondback rattlesnake. Even small insects have evolved to survive the intense heat. The Sonoran Desert fly, Drosophila mettleri, uses a specialized P450 detoxification system. This allows the fly to nest in moist soil and successfully reproduce despite the heat.

Human populations are also deeply connected to this desert landscape. Over 17 contemporary Native American tribes call this region home. Large metropolitan areas have also developed within the desert boundaries. Phoenix, Arizona, is the largest city, with a 2017 population of approximately 4.7 million people. Other significant cities include Tucson, Arizona, and Mexicali, Mexico. The Coachella Valley in California serves as a popular winter resort destination. Because of the warm climate, farmers grow citrus and subtropical fruits like mangoes and figs there.

The Sonoran Desert serves as a vital corridor for both animals and humans. It sits along the United States–Mexico border, which is a major migration path. However, the journey can be perilous due to harsh weather and border militarism. Many travelers move at night to avoid the extreme daytime heat. The desert also contains important protected areas like the Sonoran Desert National Monument. These zones help preserve the delicate balance between the desert's many species and the growing human population.
