Subtropics

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The subtropics are special zones on our planet. They sit just north and south of the hot tropics. These areas are part of the temperate zones in both hemispheres. They cover the middle latitudes from about 35 to 40 degrees north and south.

Many people live in these regions because the weather is often pleasant. Most subtropical places have hot summers and mild winters. You will not often find frost or snow here. This mild weather makes the subtropics very important for nature and farming.

Weather in the subtropics works in a few different ways. One way is called the Hadley cell. Near the equator, the sun heats the Earth. This causes air to rise and move away from the equator. As the air moves toward the middle latitudes, it cools and sinks. This sinking air creates a high-pressure area.

This process is why many of the world's deserts are in the subtropics. These dry areas often sit on the southwest sides of continents. Other areas near warm oceans have hot and wet summers. These places might get rain from tropical cyclones or typhoons.

Scientists use different systems to name these climates. One famous system is the Köppen climate classification. It helps define how much rain and heat a place gets. Another way to look at it is the Trewartha system. This system says a subtropical place must have eight months of warm weather. There is also the Troll-Paffen classification. This system looks at plain and hilly lands. It divides the subtropical zone into seven smaller areas.

Different parts of the subtropics have very specific facts. The Mediterranean climate is found on the western sides of continents. This includes places like Southern California and the Mediterranean Basin. These areas have dry summers and rain in the cooler months.

In contrast, humid subtropical areas like Southeast China have wet summers. Some places even have subtropical climates in high mountains. For example, the Vietnamese Central Highlands have this climate.

Because the winters are mild, many special plants grow here. You can find palms, citrus, and mangoes in these zones. Other plants include avocado, lychee, and pistachio.

Even trees like apple and pear grow well in the subtropics. It is actually easier to control pests on these crops than in the tropics. This is because the cooler winters help keep bugs away. The subtropics are truly a busy and diverse place for life.
