Temperate climate

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Temperate climates cover the middle parts of our Earth.

Latitude zones

These zones sit between the hot tropics and the cold polar regions. They are found in the middle latitudes. This means they span from about 23.5 degrees to 66.5 degrees north or south of the Equator. Unlike the tropics, these areas have big changes in temperature throughout the year. You can feel the different seasons clearly here.

Many things help shape how the weather feels in these zones. Ocean currents and wind directions play a big role. The size of the land also matters a lot. Even how high a place is above sea level can change the climate.

There are several different ways these climates work. In the subtropical zone, the weather is influenced by the nearby tropics. These areas usually have warm temperatures all year long. They often have long, hot summers and mild winters.

Some places here have a Mediterranean climate. This means they have dry summers and wet winters. Other subtropical areas have humid climates. These often have hot, rainy summers and mild winters. In some parts of China and India, a monsoon brings very heavy rain in the summer. High mountains can also have subtropical highland climates. These areas stay mild all year round.

Moving further from the equator, we find the middle latitude zone. This area feels the influence of both the poles and the tropics. One type is the oceanic climate. These are created by cool air flowing from the ocean toward the land.

This makes summers mild and winters cool but not too cold. You will often find clouds and rain here. Other places have a humid continental climate. These are shaped by large landmasses and changing winds. They can have very hot summers and very cold winters.

Some temperate areas are near the edges of the polar zones. We call these the subpolar zone. These places still have four seasons, but they are much cooler. Subpolar oceanic climates are often found near places like Iceland or Scotland.

These areas have milder winters than the frozen north. However, they can still see a lot of snow. In some high mountains, you might even find a cold summer Mediterranean climate. These are quite rare and stay in isolated spots like the Andes Mountains.

Temperate zones are very important for life on Earth. Most people in the world live in these regions. This is because the temperatures are not too extreme.

These areas are also great for farming. Plentiful rain and warm summers help many crops grow. Because of this, many large cities are built here. However, cities can feel warmer than the countryside. This happens because buildings and roads soak up heat. Burning fuels for cars and buildings also makes city air warmer.
