Climbing this mountain is a very big job. Most people use the West Side Route to reach the top. This path starts at Shepherd's Pass. Climbers must travel across a place called the Williamson Bowl. This bowl sits between Mount Williamson and Mount Tyndall. The bowl is home to five high alpine lakes. The route then climbs up steep gullies. This leads to a wide, flat summit called a plateau. The climb involves scrambling up to 13,000 feet.

People have climbed this mountain for a long time. It is named after Lieutenant Robert Stockton Williamson. He helped with railroad surveys in Southern California. The first recorded climb was in 1884. W. L. Hunter and C. Mulholland led that trip. They used the Southeast Slopes Route. Other climbers reached the top as early as 1881. Later, in 1896, Bolton and Lucy Brown climbed the West Side Route. New paths were found on hard rock faces through the 1980s.

There are many facts about this rugged place. The mountain is in the Inyo National Forest. It sits east of the Sierra Crest. This crest forms the edge of the Owens Valley. The drop from the top to the forest is about 4,000 feet. The hike to Shepherd's Pass is 6 miles long. The total climb from the start is over 4,000 feet. These numbers show why it is a tough climb. It is much less popular than Mount Whitney.

Nature is very special on these slopes. The mountain is a home for California Bighorn Sheep. These rare animals live in a special protected area. You can often see them on the lower slopes. They move down when heavy snow falls in winter. They need to find new places to eat. For many years, the area was closed to people. This lasted from 1981 until 2010. Now, the forest service allows people to visit all year.
