It is the second highest peak in California. It is also the sixth highest peak in the lower part of the United States.

The mountain is in the John Muir Wilderness. It is near a town called Independence. It sits north of Mount Whitney. That is the highest peak in the area.

Climbers often use the West Side Route. This path goes through the Williamson Bowl. This bowl is a space between two peaks. It has five high lakes.

The top of the mountain is a broad plateau. This means it is a wide, flat area.

You might see rare Bighorn Sheep here. They live on the lower slopes in winter. Heavy snow drives them down to find food. The climb is hard and long. The trail to Shepherd's Pass is 6 miles long. The total climb is over 4,000 feet. This makes it a tough place to visit.
