Gasherbrum I

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Gasherbrum I is a very tall mountain. It is the 11th highest mountain in the world. This peak sits in the Karakoram region. It is near the border of Pakistan and China. It is part of a group called the Gasherbrum Massif.

Some people call it Hidden Peak. This is because other peaks hide it from view. You cannot see it easily from the Baltoro glacier. Its real name comes from the Balti language. It means "beautiful mountain."

Many people have climbed to the top. An American team first reached the summit in 1958. In 1982, Marie-José Vallençant became the first woman to reach the top. She is from France.

Climbing this mountain can be hard. In 2012, climbers made the first winter ascent. They did this without using extra oxygen. Some climbers have also gone down the mountain on skis. The mountain has many different paths to the top. Some paths are very steep. Others are very long. It is a place of great wonder and great challenge.
