It is the seventh highest mountain in the world. Its name comes from an old language. It means "dazzling, white, beautiful mountain."

The mountain is part of a big group of peaks. The Kali Gandaki River flows near it. This river runs through a very deep gorge. The town of Pokhara is to the south. Many people go to Pokhara to start their climb.

Dhaulagiri rises very fast from the land below. The rock at the top is special. It is made of limestone and dolomite. These rocks formed at the bottom of an ocean long ago.

People first reached the top in May 1960. A team from Switzerland, Austria, and Nepal did this. Climbing here can be very hard and dangerous. Some people have died in avalanches or falls. In 1985, a team made the first winter climb. They did this in very cold winds. Even so, people still travel to see this grand place.
