Cho Oyu is a very tall mountain.

It sits on the border of China and Nepal. In Tibet, the name means "Turquoise Goddess." This peak is the sixth highest in the world. It is part of the Himalaya mountains. It sits just west of Mount Everest.

The top of the mountain is a wide, flat area. This area is called a plateau. Because the slopes are not too steep, many people climb it. Some call it a trekking peak. It is the second most climbed mountain of its size. It is easier to climb than other huge peaks.

People have climbed Cho Oyu for a long time. An Austrian team first reached the top in 1954. They climbed the north-west ridge. In 1985, climbers made a new path in the winter. They did this without extra oxygen.
