Gasherbrum II

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Gasherbrum II is a very high mountain. It is the 13th highest mountain in the world. It sits in the Karakoram mountain range. The peak is on the border of Pakistan and China. It stands near the top of the Baltoro Glacier.

The name Gasherbrum comes from Balti words. It means "beautiful mountain." People once called it K4. This meant it was the fourth mountain in the Karakoram.

Many people love to climb this peak. An Austrian group was the first to reach the top in 1956. They had a hard time. An avalanche buried their food and supplies. Still, they made it to the top!

Climbers do many things on this mountain. Some people ski down the steep sides. In 2011, a team made the first winter climb. They did not use extra oxygen to help them breathe. Other climbers have even climbed two peaks in one trip. Gasherbrum II is a very special place for explorers.
