Gasherbrum II

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Gasherbrum II is a huge and very high mountain. It is the 13th highest mountain in the whole world. This peak sits in the Karakoram mountain range. It is located right on the border between Pakistan and China. Specifically, it marks the line between Gilgit–Baltistan and Xinjiang. The mountain stands at the top of the Baltoro Glacier. It is the third-highest peak in the Gasherbrum group. Gasherbrum I and Broad Peak are both taller than this one. Some people even think Gasherbrum III is just a small part of Gasherbrum II.

Many explorers have tried to reach the top over the years. An Austrian group was the first to succeed on July 7, 1956. This team included Fritz Moravec, Josef Larch, and Hans Willenpart. They climbed up the Southwest Ridge to reach the summit. During their trip, an avalanche buried their camp and all their food. Even with this hard job, they decided to keep going. They reached the top at 11:30 am the next day. They had to sleep in a small bivouac sack to stay safe.

In the later years, climbers found many new ways to explore. In 1981, two Swiss climbers were the first to use the alpine style. This means they climbed without using much extra gear. In 1982, Reinhold Messner climbed the Southwest Ridge with two others. During that trip, he found a missing climber and buried him near the peak. In 1984, a French team did something very cool. They were the first to ski down the mountain from the top. They used the Southwest Ridge to get back down to the base.

Speed is also very important to some mountain climbers. In 1986, a group from Slovenia climbed the peak very fast. They went from the base to the top in only 32 hours. Most groups take much longer than that to finish. In 1997, Anatoli Boukreev climbed it all by himself. He went from a high camp to the top in only 9 hours and 30 minutes. In 2006, two climbers reached the top twice in just one week. They even skied down the mountain without taking off their skis.

Today, people still find new ways to visit this giant peak. In 2011, a team made the first winter climb. This is a very hard thing to do because it is so cold. They did not use extra oxygen to help them breathe. In 2023, Andrzej Bargiel made the highest descent on skis ever recorded here. He started his ski trip from 26,362 feet high. Gasherbrum II remains a place of wonder for anyone who loves the mountains.
