Some people say the name means a grassy plain. Others tell a story about the name. They say it means meat from dead animals and malt dregs. This comes from a time when heavy snow killed animals. The people only had meat and malt to eat.

Shishapangma is the lowest of the 8,000-meter peaks. It has a second peak called Central Peak. This peak is also very high. Many climbers visit this mountain. Some say it is one of the easiest high peaks to climb. People can even drive a vehicle to the base camp. But climbing is still hard. Thirty-one people have died on this mountain. It is a grand and serious place.
