A river made the cave by wearing away the rock. This rock is called limestone. The ice in the cave forms in a special way. Snow melts and flows into the cave. Cold winter winds blow in and freeze the snow. In summer, cold wind blows out of the cave. This stops the ice from melting.

Only the first kilometer of the cave has ice. People can visit this part. They walk through big rooms. One room is called Posselt Hall. It has a tall rock shape called a stalagmite. Another room is the Ice Palace. It is 400 meters underground.

Anton Posselt found the cave in 1879. Before that, local people were afraid of it. They thought it was an entrance to Hell. Now, 200,000 people visit every year.
