The end of the ice is shaped like a cow's mouth. People call this place Gomukh. Gomukh is where the Bhagirathi River begins.

Many people visit this area for religious reasons. They walk long paths to reach the ice. Some people stay at a place called Bhojwasa.

Many smaller glaciers flow into the Gangotri Glacier. These are called tributaries. The three main ones are Raktvarn, Chaturangi, and Kirti. The glacier is also changing. It has been shrinking since the year 1780. Scientists have seen it move back many meters each year. In the last 25 years, it moved back more than 850 meters. The ice is also full of many small lakes. These lakes form as the ice melts.
