The end of the ice is shaped like a cow's mouth. People call this place Gomukh. Gomukh is where the Bhagirathi River begins. 
Many smaller glaciers flow into the Gangotri Glacier. These are called tributaries. The three main ones are Raktvarn, Chaturangi, and Kirti. The glacier is also changing. It has been shrinking since the year 1780. Scientists have seen it move back many meters each year. In the last 25 years, it moved back more than 850 meters. The ice is also full of many small lakes. These lakes form as the ice melts.

It also forms serrated ridge crests, glacial troughs, and rock basins. These features are carved into the mountain over time. On the other hand, depositional features are also present. These include talus cones, snow-avalanche fans, and dead ice mounds. The glacier also moves over various types of bedrock. These rocks include granites, garnet mica schist, and kyanite schist.
The Gangotri system is supported by several major tributary glaciers. There are three main systems: Raktvarn, Chaturangi, and Kirti. The Raktvarn system is 15.90 km long and contains seven tributary glaciers. Important glaciers in this system include Thelu, Swetvarn, Nilambar, and Pilapani. The Chaturangi system includes the Seeta, Suralaya, and Vasuki glaciers. The Kirti system consists of only three tributary glaciers. In total, there are more than 18 smaller tributary glaciers in the area. 
Scientists have been monitoring the retreat of this glacier for a long time. Measurements of the glacier's movement began in 1780. Data collected between 1936 and 1996 showed a total recession of 1147 meters. During that time, the average retreat rate was 19 meters per year. However, the glacier has been receding faster in recent decades. Over the last 25 years of the 21st century, it retreated more than 850 meters. This represents a much faster rate of 34 meters per year. 
The glacier holds deep cultural and religious significance for many people. It is a traditional Hindu pilgrimage site. Devout Hindus believe that bathing in the icy waters near Gangotri is a holy ritual. Many pilgrims trek to a place called Gomukh, or Gaumukh. This name means "cow's mouth" because the terminus of the glacier resembles a cow's face. Gomukh is the precise source of the Bhagirathi River. This river is an important tributary that eventually joins the Ganges.
Reaching the glacier is a difficult journey through rugged terrain. Travelers must trek from Gangotri through locations like Devgadh, Chirbhasa, and Bhojwasa. Currently, accommodation is only available at Bhojwasa. The path has become more difficult due to the 2013 North Indian Floods. These floods destroyed much of the existing trail. Today, hikers face trail deterioration and a massive 2 km wide rockfall site. The surrounding peaks, such as Shivling and Meru, offer extremely challenging climbing routes for experts.
