The city's importance is deeply tied to the movement of the Ganges river. The river flows from its source at Gaumukh near the Gangotri Glacier. At Haridwar, the river enters the Gangetic Plain for the first time.

This transition gives the city its ancient name, Gangadvára, or the Gateway of the Ganges. The river is central to the city's identity and its many religious traditions. Many people visit to participate in the Kanwar pilgrimage. During this event, millions of people collect sacred water from the Ganges. They carry this water hundreds of miles to offer it at Shiva shrines.

Religious legends explain why the city is considered so sacred. One legend describes how the goddess Ganga descended to Earth. It is said that the god Shiva released the river from his hair.

Another story involves the celestial bird deity, Garuda. While carrying a pitcher of amrita, the elixir of immortality, drops spilled onto the earth.

These drops fell at a spot known as Brahma Kund. This location is found at the Har ki Pauri ghat. This site is considered the most sacred part of the city. The name Har ki Pauri translates to the "footsteps of the Lord."

Haridwar hosts massive religious gatherings at specific intervals. The most significant of these is the Kumbha Mela. This event is celebrated every 12 years. During the festival, millions of pilgrims and tourists arrive in the city. They gather on the banks of the Ganges to perform ritual bathing. They believe this act washes away sins and helps them attain moksha. The city also serves as a gateway for the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage. This route leads to four principal destinations: Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.

The history of Haridwar spans thousands of years and many different rulers. Archaeological evidence shows a terra cotta culture existed there between 1700 BCE and 1200 BCE. The city later came under the rule of the Maurya and Kushan Empires.

In the 7th century, the Chinese traveler Huan Tsang recorded the area. He mentioned a place called Mo-yu-lo, which is now near Mayapur. Later, the city fell to the Delhi Sultanate and the conqueror Timur Lang. During the Mughal era, Emperor Akbar called the Ganges the "water of immortality." He even had water sent to him in sealed jars.

In the 19th century, the political and physical landscape of the city changed. After the Anglo-Nepalese War, the British East India Company took control in 1815. The British built the Bhimgoda dam in the 1840s to manage the river.

They also opened the Upper Ganges Canal in 1854 to help with irrigation after a famine. This canal system changed how the river was used. While it helped farming, it also caused the river to decay as an inland waterway. The city was also connected to the railway system starting in 1886.

Modern Haridwar is developing quickly beyond its ancient religious roots. It has become an important industrial center for the state. The State Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand (SIDCUL) manages a fast-growing industrial estate. The city is also home to the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) township.
