This is because there are many holy Hindu temples and pilgrimage sites. Famous places like Rishikesh, Haridwar, and the Himalayas draw many visitors. 
Humans have lived in these mountains for a very long time. Archaeologists have found evidence of people living here since prehistoric times. You can see ancient rock paintings in the Lakhudiyar caves at Almora. 
Life in Uttarakhand is shaped by its geography and culture. Most people follow the Hindu religion, while Islam is the next largest group. Many people speak Hindi, which is the official language. There are also many local languages like Garhwali, Kumaoni, and Jaunsari. People from the two main regions are called Garhwali or Kumaoni. The economy used to rely mostly on farming and hydropower. Now, the service industry is the biggest part of the economy. This includes many jobs in travel, tourism, and hotels. 
There is so much to discover in this mountain state. It is known as one of the greenest states in India. The state even has two World Heritage sites. Visitors can see beautiful flowers or look for unique animals in the wild.

This started the official process of making a new state. On November 9, 2000, Uttarakhand became the 27th state of India. The state is often called "Devabhumi," which means Land of the Gods. This is due to its many Hindu temples and pilgrimage sites.
