The state's name has interesting possible origins. Some anthropologists believe the name comes from the Ābhiras. This community settled in the region after the period of the Mahābhārata. They were known for developing advanced agricultural techniques. Historian Pran Nath Chopra suggests a linguistic evolution. He proposes the name grew from Ābhirāyana, meaning the "path" or "way" of the Ābhiras. Over time, this term likely shifted to Ahirāyana and eventually to Hariyānā.
Ancient history in Haryana is incredibly deep and complex. The villages of Rakhigarhi and Bhirrana contain sites from the Indus Valley Civilization. These sites reveal advanced engineering, such as paved roads and drainage systems. They also show evidence of large-scale rainwater collection and skilled metalworking in bronze and precious metals. During the Vedic era, the Kuru kingdom was located here. This was one of the great Mahajanapadas. Some traditions also link the southern region to the state of Brahmavarta, which was surrounded by the Sarasvati and Drishadwati rivers.
Many powerful dynasties and leaders have shaped the region through the centuries. In the 7th century, the Pushyabhuti dynasty ruled parts of northern India from its capital at Thanesar.

Modern Haryana was officially formed on 1 November 1966. It was created through the Punjab Reorganisation Act. Before this, the area was part of the Punjab province. The Indian government established the Shah Commission to decide the new boundaries. This commission focused on linguistic lines to separate Hindi-speaking areas from Punjabi-speaking areas. The state capital is Chandigarh, which is a union territory shared with Punjab. Bhagwat Dayal Sharma served as the first Chief Minister. Chaudhary Devi Lal was also a key figure in pushing for the state's creation.
The state's economy is a major driver for the country. Haryana has the 13th largest economy in India. It holds the 5th-highest Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) per capita in the nation.

Demographics in Haryana are shaped by significant historical migrations. During the 1947 Partition, many Punjabi Hindus and Sikhs moved to Haryana from West Punjab. This migration brought valuable agricultural and business expertise to the state. A second wave occurred in the 1980s due to political instability in Punjab. These groups make up more than one-third of the current population.
