Punjab is a significant geographical and historical region in South Asia. It is located in the northwestern part of the continent. Today, the territory is divided between modern-day Pakistan and northwestern India. The region is primarily inhabited by the Punjabi people. They are an ethnolinguistic group, meaning they share a common language and culture. Most residents speak the Indo-Aryan Punjabi language.
The name "Punjab" has a specific meaning rooted in its geography. It is a word of Persian origin. The name is a calque, which is a word-for-word translation, of the Indo-Aryan term "pañca-áp." In English, this means "The Land of Five Waters."
Agriculture serves as the economic foundation of the Punjab. This way of life grew from early settlements along the riverbanks. These rivers also acted as a vital route to the Near East. During the mid-1960s and mid-1970s, the region experienced the Green Revolution. This was a period of massive growth in agricultural production. Because of this, the Punjab is often called the "breadbasket" of both India and Pakistan. This title shows how much food the region provides for its neighbors.
The history of the region began with the Indus Valley civilization. This was one of the world's earliest urban societies. It flourished from approximately 3300 BCE until it declined around 1300 BCE. Following this, Indo-Aryan migrations occurred between 1500 BCE and 500 BCE. During the ancient period, local kingdoms known as Mahajanapadas emerged. These were larger groupings ruled by kings or chieftains. The famous Hindu epics, the Ramayana and Mahabharata, chronicle the rise of these dynasties and their many battles.
In the 4th century BCE, the region saw the invasion of Alexander the Great. He fought a famous battle called the Battle of the Hydaspes in 326 BCE. The local ruler, King Porus, fought Alexander from atop an elephant.

Many different empires have controlled the Punjab over the centuries. The Hindu Shahi dynasty ruled Western Punjab and parts of Afghanistan in the 9th century. Later, Islam took hold in Western Punjab under Ghaznavid rule. The Delhi Sultanate followed the Ghaznavids. In the 15th century, the Langah Sultanate emerged in the south. After the Mughal Empire declined in the 18th century, the region saw a period of anarchy. During this time, 12 Sikh Misls and various Muslim states fought for power. Eventually, the Sikh Empire was established in 1799 CE.

The religious landscape of the Punjab is very diverse. In West Punjab, which is in Pakistan, Punjabi Muslims are the majority. In East Punjab, which is in India, Punjabi Sikhs are the majority.
