The history of the city began in the 18th century. It is much newer than the ancient cities of Lahore or Sialkot. The name likely comes from the Gujjar tribe. Some say it comes from a village called Serai Gujran.

Gujranwala is a major metropolitan hub located in the northeastern part of the Punjab province in Pakistan.

It sits within a land region known as the Rachna Doab. The city serves as the headquarters for both its eponymous district and division. Currently, it is the fourth-largest city in the Punjab province. It also ranks as the fifth-most populous city in the entire country of Pakistan. Many people recognize it by its nickname, the "City of Wrestlers." The city is also widely celebrated for its unique cuisine and its deep historical importance to the region.

Economically, Gujranwala is a vital engine for the nation. It is Pakistan's third-largest industrial center, following only Karachi and Faisalabad. The city is a key part of the "Golden Triangle." This is a network of highly industrialized cities including Sialkot and Gujrat. These cities possess export-oriented economies, meaning they produce goods to sell to other countries.

Gujranwala contributes a significant portion to the national economy. It accounts for approximately 5% to 9% of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This makes it a central part of one of Pakistan's most productive industrial regions.

The origins of the city are tied to the Gujjar tribe. The name Gujranwala likely means "abode of the Gujjars" in the Punjabi language. One local story claims the name honors Choudhry Gujjar, who owned a Persian wheel there. This wheel supplied water to the town. However, scholars suggest the name comes from Serai Gujran. This was a village located near the modern-day Khiyali Gate.

While some believe the city began as a village in the mid-16th century, it is much younger than nearby ancient cities like Lahore. It truly began to take shape as a formal town during the 18th century.

History in the region changed rapidly during the 18th century. As Mughal power weakened, the Sikh Misls, or independent chieftainships, rose to prominence. Charat Singh, the ruler of the Sukerchakia Misl, built a fort in the area between 1756 and 1758. He made Gujranwala the capital of his misl in 1763. The city holds great significance as the birthplace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He was born in the Purani Mandi market in 1780. Gujranwala served as the capital of the Sikh Empire from 1799 to 1801. The capital eventually moved to Lahore after Ranjit Singh captured the city from the Durrani Afghans.

During the era of the Sikh Empire, the city saw significant structural changes. The military commander Hari Singh Nalwa was given the area as a jagir, which is a type of land grant.

Nalwa helped the city prosper and built a high mud wall around it. He also established a new grid street-plan that is still used today. By 1839, the city's bazaars contained about 500 shops. The area was also known for its many pleasure gardens. One garden, established by Nalwa, was famous for its many exotic plants.

The British Empire captured the area in 1848, leading to rapid development. The city was officially incorporated as a municipality in 1867. During this period, the North-Western Railway connected Gujranwala to other cities in 1881.

New neighborhoods like the Civil Lines were created to house the European population. This era also saw the arrival of Christian missionaries, who established various churches and schools.

The Partition of 1947 was a period of intense upheaval and violence. Following the independence of Pakistan, Gujranwala experienced severe rioting. Many Hindu and Sikh localities were destroyed during this time. The city became a destination for many Muslim refugees fleeing from eastern Punjab in India. By March 1948, over 300,000 refugees had been resettled in the Gujranwala District. This influx of people changed the city's social and physical form. New suburban districts like Satellite Town and Model Town were later built to accommodate the growing population.

In the decades following Partition, Gujranwala underwent massive industrial growth. In 1947, the city had only 39 registered factories. By 1961, that number had risen to 225. The city became a major center for hosiery manufacturing and the jewelry trade. Refugees from Ludhiana and Patiala brought these specific skills to the region. Today, the city continues to expand with modern infrastructure. This includes the 5,774-foot long flyover that acts as an urban expressway. The city remains a vital part of Pakistan's industrial landscape.
