Haryana is a prominent state located in the northwestern part of India.

It occupies a strategic position by surrounding the national capital, Delhi, on three sides: the north, west, and south. This proximity means a large portion of the state is part of the National Capital Region. This region is vital for coordinated planning and economic development. To the north, Haryana borders Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. Rajasthan lies to the west and south. The Yamuna River serves as a natural eastern border with Uttar Pradesh.

The state's name has interesting possible origins. Some anthropologists believe the name comes from the Ābhiras. This community settled in the region after the period of the Mahābhārata. They were known for developing advanced agricultural techniques. Historian Pran Nath Chopra suggests a linguistic evolution. He proposes the name grew from Ābhirāyana, meaning the "path" or "way" of the Ābhiras. Over time, this term likely shifted to Ahirāyana and eventually to Hariyānā.

Ancient history in Haryana is incredibly deep and complex. The villages of Rakhigarhi and Bhirrana contain sites from the Indus Valley Civilization. These sites reveal advanced engineering, such as paved roads and drainage systems. They also show evidence of large-scale rainwater collection and skilled metalworking in bronze and precious metals. During the Vedic era, the Kuru kingdom was located here. This was one of the great Mahajanapadas. Some traditions also link the southern region to the state of Brahmavarta, which was surrounded by the Sarasvati and Drishadwati rivers.

Many powerful dynasties and leaders have shaped the region through the centuries. In the 7th century, the Pushyabhuti dynasty ruled parts of northern India from its capital at Thanesar.

Later, the Tomara dynasty controlled the southern parts of Haryana. The city of Panipat became a site for three major historical battles. In 1526, Babur defeated the Lodis in the First Battle of Panipat. In 1556, the Second Battle of Panipat saw Akbar defeat Hem Chandra Vikramaditya.

Hemu was a powerful leader who had won 22 battles across India. Finally, in 1761, the Third Battle of Panipat occurred when Ahmad Shah Abdali defeated the Marathas.

Modern Haryana was officially formed on 1 November 1966. It was created through the Punjab Reorganisation Act. Before this, the area was part of the Punjab province. The Indian government established the Shah Commission to decide the new boundaries. This commission focused on linguistic lines to separate Hindi-speaking areas from Punjabi-speaking areas. The state capital is Chandigarh, which is a union territory shared with Punjab. Bhagwat Dayal Sharma served as the first Chief Minister. Chaudhary Devi Lal was also a key figure in pushing for the state's creation.

The state's economy is a major driver for the country. Haryana has the 13th largest economy in India. It holds the 5th-highest Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) per capita in the nation.

The state also contains 32 Special Economic Zones (SEZs). These are mostly located within industrial corridors near the National Capital Region. Many people also contribute to the economy through agriculture on green farms.

Demographics in Haryana are shaped by significant historical migrations. During the 1947 Partition, many Punjabi Hindus and Sikhs moved to Haryana from West Punjab. This migration brought valuable agricultural and business expertise to the state. A second wave occurred in the 1980s due to political instability in Punjab. These groups make up more than one-third of the current population.
