Faridabad is a major city located in the Indian state of Haryana. It serves as a vital part of the Delhi National Capital Region. This means it functions as a satellite city to the nearby capital of Delhi. The Yamuna River flows along its eastern side. This river acts as a natural boundary between Haryana and the state of Uttar Pradesh. The city is situated 284 kilometres south of Chandigarh, which is the capital of Haryana.

The city is currently undergoing significant urban development. A large area known as Greater Faridabad is being built. This area sits between the Agra Canal and the Yamuna River. It is also sometimes called Neharpar. This new section is designed to be a self-sustained sub-city. It will feature wide roads, tall buildings, and many malls. The development includes new educational institutions and health centers. Specific sectors are organized by use. Sectors 66 to 74 are dedicated to industry. Sectors 75 to 89 are designated for residential living.

Faridabad has a long and complex history. Sheikh Farid founded the city in 1607. He was the treasurer for the Mughal emperor Jahangir. His goal was to protect the Grand Trunk Road. This road connects the major cities of Delhi and Agra. The city sits within the cultural regions of Braj and Mewat. In 1947, the city experienced major social changes following the partition. Under the leadership of Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, over 50,000 refugees were resettled here. This influx of people helped revive the city's social life and economy. Later, on 15 August 1979, Faridabad became an independent district. It was previously part of the Gurgaon district.

Today, Faridabad is known as the industrial capital of Haryana. It is a massive hub for manufacturing many different products. The city is the largest exporter of henna, also known as Mehandi, in India. Its industries also produce tractors, motorcycles, and refrigerators. Other products include switch gears, shoes, tyres, and garments. Many famous large-scale companies have operations here. These include companies like Escorts Limited, India Yamaha Motor, and Goodyear. There are also more than 5,000 units that produce auto parts. This industrial strength is very important for the state. Faridabad and Gurgaon together provide 50% of the income tax collected in Haryana.

The climate in Faridabad follows three distinct Indian seasons. The city has a borderline hot semi-arid climate. It also features a humid subtropical climate during the dry winter. The "hot" pre-monsoon season lasts from late March to mid-July. This period is very dry and becomes quite humid. The "wet" monsoon season follows with heavy and erratic rainfall. This season can be very humid and sweltering. The "cool" winter season is the most comfortable time. It offers warm and sunny weather. However, the city faces environmental challenges. In 2018, the World Health Organization identified it as a very polluted city. The World Air Quality Report 2024 also listed it among the 20 most polluted cities in India.

Faridabad is a highly connected urban center. The Delhi Metro's Violet Line connects the city to Delhi. This line includes 11 stations in the Faridabad corridor. These stations are all elevated. The line reaches as far as Raja Nahar Singh in Ballabhgarh. There are plans to extend this line 24 km further to Palwal. For road travel, the Delhi Faridabad Skyway is a major connection.
