It is located within the Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh. The city is a key part of the National Capital Region (NCR). This region helps manage the growth of the nearby capital, Delhi. Noida sits in a floodplain between two rivers. The Yamuna River bounds the city to the west and southwest. The Hindon River flows along the north, northeast, and southeast. Much of the city sits on an old riverbed. This location provides rich, loamy soil, though much of the land is not very fertile for farming.

The city was established on April 17, 1976. This date is celebrated annually as "Noida Day." It was created under the UP Industrial Area Development Act. The initiative was led by Sanjay Gandhi during the Emergency period. The city was designed to decentralize growth from Delhi. Today, the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority (NOIDA) manages the city. The NOIDA Authority is one of the wealthiest civic bodies in India. It is a statutory authority under the Uttar Pradesh government. The authority is led by a Chairman and a CEO, both of whom are IAS officers.

Noida is a significant economic engine for the region. It is a prominent hub for information technology (IT). Many global software companies have offices here. These include Microsoft, Samsung, HCL, Arm Holdings, and Barclays.
