It sits in the central-western part of the state. The city is positioned southeast of New Delhi, which is the national capital. It is also southwest of Lucknow, the state capital. Kanpur lies within the historical region of Awadh. The city is built upon the flat Indo-Gangetic Plains. This geography makes it a significant hub for the region.

The city's development was driven by its proximity to the Ganga river.

The river flows along the right bank of the city. The East India Company used this location to start an indigo trade. Indigo is a plant used to make blue dye. Major infrastructure projects helped the city grow even faster. The Grand Trunk Road was constructed in 1832. Later, in 1864, new roads linked Kanpur to Lucknow and Kalpi. These connections turned the area into a vital commercial and military station.

Kanpur has a complex history involving many different rulers. A Rajput ruler named Hindu Singh Chandel is believed to have founded the city. It was originally called Kanhapur. Some believe the name comes from the Kanhaiya Ashtam festival. Others suggest it relates to the character Karna from the Mahabharata. In its early days, Kanpur was just a group of small villages. These included places like Patkapura, Kuraswam, Juhi, and Seesamau. The area eventually became a major British garrison town.

The Indian Rebellion of 1857 brought significant conflict to the city.

During this time, 900 British people were besieged in fortifications for 22 days. This event involved leaders like Nana Sahib. After a siege, a group of British people attempted to leave via the Sati Chaura Ghat. However, they were shot at by sepoys, who are Indian soldiers. This event is known as the Cawnpore Massacre. The violence led to intense retaliation by British forces under General Neill. These historical events left a lasting impact on the city's identity.

Today, Kanpur is a massive metropolitan area with a very large population. According to the 2011 census, the city and its suburbs had about 5 million people. This made it the eighth-most populous metropolitan area in India. The Kanpur Nagar district alone had 4,581,000 residents in 2011. Projections for 2023 suggest the district population reached over 6.3 million. The city is a diverse place where many religions live together. Hinduism is the majority religion, followed by a sizeable Muslim minority. Other groups include Sikhs, Christians, and Buddhists.

Modern Kanpur features many important institutions and landmarks.

The city's administration is organized into several different levels. The Kanpur division is headed by a Divisional Commissioner. This officer manages infrastructure and law and order for six districts. The local city government is the Kanpur Municipal Corporation. It was established in 1861 and upgraded in 1959. The corporation manages a large area of 403 square kilometers. It handles tasks like city cleansing, health, and education. The city also relies on the Kanpur Development Authority to oversee new infrastructure.
