Geographically, the city lies in the Doab region. This is the fertile land situated between the Ganges and Yamuna rivers. Meerut is a vital part of the regional economy and infrastructure. It acts as a key connection point between several large urban areas.

The city's economy is driven by several specialized industries. Meerut is widely known as the "Sports City of India" because of its massive sports goods industry. It is also a significant producer of musical instruments in the country. Additionally, the city hosts one of the largest gold markets in all of Asia.

Other accounts link the city to King Yudhishthira or King Mahipala. Archaeological evidence provides a physical history as well. Excavations at Vidura-ka-Tila suggest the site contains remains of the ancient city of Hastinapur.

The region also hosted a Harappan settlement called Alamgirpur. This was the easternmost settlement of the Indus Valley civilisation. Furthermore, Meerut was a center for Buddhism during the Mauryan Empire.

Throughout history, Meerut has been shaped by many different rulers. In the eleventh century, the region was ruled by Har Dat, the Dor Raja of Bulandshahr. This area was later targeted by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1018. The city also faced a violent attack by Timur in 1399. During the Mughal Empire, Meerut experienced a period of relative stability. Under Emperor Akbar, the city functioned as a pargana within the Delhi Sarkar. It even operated a mint that produced copper coins for the imperial treasury.

This location became the spark for the 1857 rebellion. The conflict began when Indian sepoys refused to use new Enfield cartridges. Soldiers believed the paper coverings were greased with pig or cow fat. This religious concern led to a mutiny in the Meerut cantonment.

On 10 May 1857, prisoners escaped and joined the uprising. This event is why Meerut is often called "Kranti Dhara," or the land of revolution.
