At that time, the area was part of the Barah country. This region was controlled by the Barha Sayyids, a Muslim kinship group. These influential brothers even became the de-facto rulers of the Mughal empire in the 1710s. The earliest settlers in the region were Brahmins and Rajputs. Later, migrations brought Jat and Gurjar tribes to the area. In 1947, the city celebrated Indian independence when the national flag was hoisted for the first time.

The economy of the region is heavily driven by agriculture and industry. Muzaffarnagar is famously known as the "sugarbowl" of Uttar Pradesh. This title comes from its massive production of sugar and jaggery. The district contains eight different sugar mills. More than 40% of the local population works in agriculture. In fact, the region has the highest agricultural GDP in Uttar Pradesh.

The city's development is tied to large industrial corridors that link major Indian cities. While it is a center of growth, it also faces historical and social complexities.
