Shahjahanpur is a municipal corporation located in Western Uttar Pradesh, India. It serves as the district headquarters for the Shahjahanpur District. The town is positioned geographically between the cities of Bareilly and Lucknow. Lucknow is the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh. This urban area sits at an average elevation of 194 metres above sea level. A notable geographic feature is its location at the junction of two rivers.

The historical origins of Shahjahanpur are tied to the Mughal Empire. The town was established by Diler Khan and Bahadur Khan. These two men were the sons of Darya Khan. Darya Khan was a soldier in the army of the Mughal emperor Jahangir. He originally came from Kandahar, which is in modern-day Afghanistan. Both Diler Khan and Bahadur Khan held high positions during the reign of Shah Jahan.

In 1647, the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan granted specific lands to Diler Khan. This gift followed the suppression of the rebellious Katheria Rajputs. The emperor gave Diler Khan 17 villages. He also gave him permission to construct a fort in the area. Later, the settlement grew when Bahadur Khan brought Afghan settlers to the region. These settlers arrived following one of his military campaigns.

Shahjahanpur is also linked to the history of the Indian independence movement. On 9 August 1925, a group of freedom fighters performed a significant action. They conducted a robbery of government funds near the Kakori railway station. This group included Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Chandrashekhar Azad, and Rajendra Lahiri. Notably, both Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaqulla Khan were born in Shahjahanpur.

Demographic data from the 2011 census provides a look at the modern population. The Shahjahanpur urban agglomeration had 329,736 residents at that time. This total included 173,006 males and 156,730 females. The literacy rate for the area was 67.25%. Specifically, the rate was 71.49% for males and 62.59% for females. Scheduled Castes made up 8.47% of the total population. Hindi is the most spoken language, while Urdu is the second most spoken.

The town is well-connected to the rest of Uttar Pradesh through various transport networks. National Highway 30 links the town directly to Bareilly and Lucknow. Additionally, a spur route known as National Highway 731 passes through the area. This highway connects Shahjahanpur to the town of Jaunpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The railway system is also vital for travel. The Shahjahanpur railway station sits on the Lucknow–Moradabad line of the Indian Railways. Many through trains traveling from Lucknow to Delhi pass through this station.

Cultural heritage is a major part of the identity of Shahjahanpur. The area is home to the Shahjahanpur gharana. A gharana is a system of musical lineage or a school of music. This gharana has produced many eminent players of the sarod, which is a stringed instrument. Famous musicians include Enayat Ali, Ustad Murad Ali Khan, and Ustad Mohammed Ameer Khan. Other notable names are Pandit Radhika Mohan Moitra and Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta. The modern sarod legend, Amjad Ali Khan, also belongs to this gharana.

Many notable people have emerged from this region in different fields. Beyond the freedom fighters, the town has produced spiritual leaders like Ram Chandra, also known as Babuji. It has also been home to scholars such as the Pakistani Islamic scholar Abu Salman Shahjahanpuri. In the world of entertainment, actors like Rajpal Yadav and Alok Pandey are from the area. The town also has a history of political figures and military heroes, such as Naik Jadu Nath Singh, who received the Param Vir Chakra.
