Udaipur is a major city in the north-western Indian state of Rajasthan.

Because of its many interconnected lakes, Udaipur is often called the "Venice of the East." This nickname highlights the city's unique relationship with water.

The city's geography is defined by a complex lake system. This system arises from the Berach River and its various tributaries. The Berach River is part of the Banas Basin. This basin is a component of the larger Gangetic river system. The water flows through the rivers Banas, Chambal, and Yamuna to reach the Ganga. The lakes are divided into three specific categories. The upper lakes include Lake Badi, Chhota Madar, and Bada Madar. Within the municipal boundary, there are several city lakes. These include Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar Lake, Swaroop Sagar Lake, and Rangsagar.

There is also a downstream lake called Udaisagar Lake. This interconnected network is vital for the region. It supports groundwater recharge and provides water for drinking, agriculture, and industry.

Udaipur's history began in 1559 when it was founded by Udai Singh II. He belonged to the Sisodia clan of Rajputs. He chose to move the capital of the Mewar kingdom from Chittorgarh to Udaipur. He wanted a more secure location after Chittorgarh was besieged by the Mughal Emperor Akbar.

Legend says Udai Singh II found a ridge east of Lake Pichola while hunting. A hermit blessed him at this site and guided him to build a palace. To protect the new capital, Udai Singh II built a six-kilometre-long city wall. This wall featured seven gates, such as Surajpole and Delhi Gate. The area inside these walls is still known today as the old city or the walled city.

The city has faced many political shifts over the centuries. In 1576, Emperor Akbar arrived in the area and attempted to conquer Udaipur. This led to the Battle of Haldighati. Despite the pressure, the mountainous terrain helped protect Udaipur from heavy Mughal influence. By the mid-18th century, the region fell under the influence of the Maratha Empire. In 1818, Mewar became a British princely state. After India gained independence in 1947, the Mewar province became part of Rajasthan. Today, Maharana Mahendra Singh Mewar is recognized as the 76th custodian of the Mewar dynasty.

Udaipur is a major destination for tourism due to its scenic beauty and Rajput-era architecture.

Visitors come to see historic forts, palaces, and museums. The City Palace is one of the most prominent landmarks.

The city's climate is classified as a hot semi-arid climate. It has three main seasons: summer, monsoon, and winter. Summer runs from mid-March to June, with high temperatures. The monsoon season arrives in July and brings greenery to the lakes. The winter season lasts from October to March and offers pleasant weather. Many tourists visit between mid-September and early April to enjoy these conditions.

The economy of Udaipur is quite diverse. Tourism is a primary driver, but other industries are very important. The city has significant mineral and marble processing industries. Chemical manufacturing and electronic manufacturing also contribute to the economy. The handicraft industry is another major economic factor.
