Bhilwara is a significant city and administrative center in Rajasthan, India. It serves as the headquarters for the Bhilwara district within the Mewar region. The city is widely recognized as the "textile city" of India. This title reflects its massive role in producing fabrics. Bhilwara is a hub for manufacturing, mining, and agriculture. It is a vital part of the economic landscape in Rajasthan.

The textile industry is the primary driver of the local economy. There are more than 850 manufacturing units located within the town. These factories produce high-quality cotton, silk, and woolen fabrics. A major product is the synthetic fabric used for trousers. This industry began to grow significantly in the 20th century. In 1938, Shri Sampatmal Lodha started Mewar Textile Mills. This was a spinning and knitting company. Later, in 1961, Shri Laxmi Niwas Jhunjhunwala opened a unit for synthetic textiles. Today, these fabrics are exported to many countries around the world.

Bhilwara sits at an average elevation of 421 meters. It is located between the districts of Ajmer to the north. To the south, it is bordered by Chittorgarh and Udaipur. The geography is defined by several major rivers. These include the Banas, Bedach, Kothari, Khari, Mansi, Menali, Chandrabhaga, and Nagdi. While there are no natural lakes, the district uses many ponds and dams. This infrastructure makes Bhilwara the most irrigated district in Rajasthan. One notable man-made feature is Mansarovar Jheel. This pond is located near Azad Nagar and attracts many visitors on weekends.

The history of the region reaches back to the Stone Age. Archaeologists have discovered stone tools dating from 5,012 to 200,000 years ago. There are several theories regarding the name "Bhilwara." One theory suggests it comes from "Bhiladi," a type of coin minted in a local mint. Another story links the name to the Bheel, an original Adivasi tribe. It is said they helped Maharana Pratap in his war against the Mughal Empire. This theory suggests the name comes from "Bheel" plus "Bada," meaning Bheel's area. The oldest part of the city was established in the 11th century. It centered around the Bada Mandir, a Krishna Radha temple that still stands.

Ancient and medieval history also leave marks on the landscape. Some references suggest Arjuna fought in this area during the Mahabharata period. Near Bhilwara, the town of Mandal once served as a Mughal military camp. This camp was used during the conquest of Chittaurgarh. Today, visitors can still see the ruins of that campsite. A watch tower built on a mound in Mandal is now a Devi temple. These sites connect the modern city to much older eras of conflict and settlement.

Bhilwara is also a center for unique cultural expressions. The city is famous for Phad paintings. These are traditional story depictions painted on cloth. Artists use colors that are available naturally. Shree Lal Joshi was a notable Phad artist who helped save this tradition. Another famous artist is Badri Lal Chitrakar, known for Indian miniature art. He received the Shilp Guru award in 2006. These artistic traditions bring international attention to the city's heritage.

Modern infrastructure supports the city's large population. According to the 2011 census, the population was 359,483. The literacy rate was 82.20% for those aged seven and older. The city is well-connected by several National Highways. National Highway 48 is part of the Golden Quadrilateral. National Highway 76 is part of the East-West Corridor. A broad gauge railway line connects Bhilwara to many major Indian cities. These include Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad. The nearest airport is at Dabok, near Udaipur, which is 165 kilometers away. There is also the Kishangarh Airport near Ajmer.

Education is a key feature of the city's development. Bhilwara hosts several specialized institutions for higher learning. The MLV Textile and Engineering College is an autonomous government college. It offers specific courses in textile engineering. There is also Sangam University, which is a private university. For medical studies, students attend the Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scidia Medical College. The city is also known for coaching centers. These centers help students prepare for competitive exams like IIT-JEE and NEET.
