This location places it within the National Capital Region. This designation has led to many modern development projects. These include improvements to drinking water and plans for rapid-rail connections to Delhi.

The name "Alwar" has several different theories regarding its origin. Archaeologist Alexander Cunningham suggested it came from the Salva tribe. He believed the name evolved from Salwapur to Salwar and finally to Alwar. Another theory links the name to the Aravali mountains, calling it Aravalpur. Some believe it honors Khanzada Alawal Khan Mewati, a Muslim prince. Research during the reign of Maharaja Jai Singh suggested the city was founded in 1049 A.D. Maharaja Alaghraj named the original settlement Alpur after himself.

Over time, the spelling changed from Ulwar to Alwar.

Alwar has a complex history shaped by many different ruling dynasties. The region was once part of the Matsya Kingdom. Ancient texts describe the Salva tribe as a non-Vedic group in this area. Throughout the medieval period, various groups held power. These included the Jadauns, Nikumbh Rajputs, and the Khanzada Rajputs. The Maratha Empire also ruled the region for a short time. In the 16th century, a leader named Hemu became a major figure. Born in a village near Alwar, he won twenty-two battles in a row. He became the last Hindu emperor of Delhi before the Mughal regime was restored.

The modern princely state of Alwar was established in 1770. It was founded by a Kachwaha Rajput named Pratap Singh Naruka. Later, the state was divided into several distinct regions. The Rath region included areas like Neemrana and was ruled by the Lah Chauhan Rajputs.

The Wai region was ruled by Shekhawat Rajput zamindars. The Narukhand region was governed by the Naruka clan. The Mewat region had a high population of Meo Muslims. After India gained independence in 1947, Alwar joined the Matsya Union. By 1949, it became part of the current state of Rajasthan.

The geography of Alwar is defined by its natural resources and climate. The city is near the Ruparail River and the Aravali hills. The land is very rich in mineral wealth. It produces materials like marble, granite, and limestone. It also provides copper ore, quartz, and soap stone. The climate is classified as hot semi-arid. This means the area has long, sweltering summers and short, warm winters. Most rainfall occurs during the monsoon season in July and August. Alwar once held the record for the highest temperature ever recorded in India.

Visitors can find many historical and natural landmarks in the area. The Bala Qila fort sits 300 meters above the city on the Aravali Range. This fort is 5 km long and 1.5 km wide.

The City Palace, or Vinay Vilas Mahal, was built in 1793. It features marble pavilions and houses a government museum. Nearby, the Sariska Tiger Reserve offers a look at local biodiversity. It was the first reserve in the world to successfully relocate tigers. Other sites include the 17th-century Bhangarh Fort and the 19th-century Siliserh Lake.

Transportation in Alwar connects it to the rest of India. The Alwar Junction railway station sits on the Delhi–Jaipur line. This station connects the city to Delhi, Jaipur, and Mumbai.
