It is the largest state in India by total land area. This region covers 10.4 per cent of the entire country. The state sits on India's northwestern edge. It shares a border with Pakistan along the Sutlej-Indus River valley. Specifically, it borders the Pakistani provinces of Punjab and Sindh. Within India, Rajasthan is surrounded by five other states. These are Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. The name Rajasthan means "Land of Kings." This name is a portmanteau of the Sanskrit word "Raja," meaning king, and "Sthana," meaning land.

Rajasthan has a very deep and complex history. Archaeological evidence shows humans used stone tools here up to 200,000 years ago. The region was part of the Indus Valley civilisation. Kalibangan served as a major provincial capital for that civilization.

Later, the Vedic civilisation also occupied parts of this land. The Matsya kingdom is said to have covered parts of modern Jaipur and Alwar. During the classical era, the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty ruled much of the area. They were known as the Gurjaratra. This empire acted as a barrier against Arab invaders from the west for several centuries.

In the medieval period, the Rajput people established many powerful kingdoms. They were known for their warfare and chivalry. The state of Mewar became a very prominent power. Leaders like Rana Kumbha made Mewar the most powerful Rajput kingdom. Other leaders, like Rana Sanga, fought against the Lodi Empire and the Turkic Sultanates. However, the Mughal Empire eventually exerted great influence over the region. The Mughal Emperor Akbar attacked the citizens of Mewar during the siege of Chittor.
