While the name Gurugram was officially adopted to highlight its mythological heritage, many people still use the older name in daily life.

The city's rapid economic transformation began in the 1970s. This growth started when Maruti Suzuki India Limited built a manufacturing plant in the area. Later, the city gained momentum when General Electric established Genpact, a business outsourcing operation, in collaboration with the real-estate firm DLF.

Today, the city is a massive center for global business. It is India's second largest information technology (IT) hub and its largest civil aviation and hospitality hub. It also ranks as the second largest management consulting hub in the nation. The city is home to local offices for more than 250 Fortune 500 companies and thousands of startups.

Gurugram's financial importance is reflected in its wealth and investment. Although it is India's 56th largest city by population, it is the 8th largest city in terms of total wealth. The city accounts for nearly 70% of the total annual economic investments in the state of Haryana. This intense development has created a modern skyline filled with many skyscrapers.

There are an estimated 1,892 high-rise buildings in the city. The urban area is organized into 115 sectors and 36 wards to manage this large population and its many different neighborhoods.

The history of this region stretches back thousands of years to the ancient Kuru kingdom. In the late 4th century BCE, the Maurya Empire absorbed the area during the expansions of Chandragupta Maurya.

Historical records suggest the city may be linked to the 12th-century town of Gudapura. During the British colonial era, the area was a small village within the Jharsa paragana. Some historic structures from this time still exist, such as the 18th-century Aliwardi mosque and the Church of the Epiphany, which was built in 1925. Even older artifacts, like a stone pillar dating back to the 7th or 9th century, show how long people have lived here.

Despite its modern success, the city faces significant environmental challenges. Rapid growth has led to high levels of air pollution. The city also struggles with flooding because of its geographic location and limited drainage capacity.

These issues are common in many large South Asian and South East Asian cities. Maintaining a balance between massive construction and environmental health remains a constant struggle for the growing urban center.

Nature still exists in pockets around the city, providing vital habitats for wildlife. The Sahibi River flows through the region, creating various biodiversity hotspots and wetlands.

Sultanpur National Park is a famous Ramsar site known for migratory birds that arrive during seasonal changes. Other important areas include the Basai wetland, Damdama Lake, and the Mangar Bani forest. Mangar Bani is a sacred grove and one of the last surviving natural forests in the National Capital Region. These natural spaces are often under threat from builders and urban expansion.

The climate in Gurugram is classified as a hot semi-arid climate.

The city experiences four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Summers from mid-April to September are typically hot and humid, with high temperatures often breaking 40 degrees Celsius. The monsoon season arrives between June and September, bringing thunderstorms and significant rainfall. Winters are generally cool and can be quite foggy. This variety of weather and the city's mix of ancient history and high-tech industry make Gurugram a unique part of India's landscape.
