It serves as a vital satellite city located northwest of the historic city of Pune. The city sits southeast of Mumbai, which is the capital of the state. PCMC is a massive hub for manufacturing, information technology, and automotive industries. It is currently the fifth largest city in Maharashtra by population. Nationally, it ranks as the eighteenth largest city in India. On a global scale, it is the sixteenth largest satellite city in the world. This rapid growth makes it one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the country.

The geography of the region is characterized by relatively flat terrain. The altitude across the city limits varies between 530 and 570 meters above sea level. The underlying geology consists of Deccan trap basalt, which is a type of volcanic rock.

Three significant rivers flow through this landscape: the Pavana, the Mula, and the Indrayani. These rivers all originate from the Western Ghats mountain range. Building stone is the only commercially important mineral found in this area. The city's climate is classified as tropical wet and dry. This means it experiences distinct seasons of summer, monsoon, and winter.

Summer months typically run from February to May. During this time, temperatures can exceed 35°C and sometimes reach 42°C. May is often the warmest month and can bring heavy, dusty winds. The monsoon season occurs from June to September, providing most of the annual 722 mm of rainfall. July is generally the wettest month of the year. Winter temperatures range from a minimum of 12°C to a maximum of 30°C. On cold nights, temperatures can even drop below 10°C. The lowest temperature ever recorded in the city was on 17 January 1935.

The history of the region stretches back many centuries. The earliest references to the Pune region appear on copper plates from 758 and 768 AD. These plates, known as "Puny Vishaya" and "Punaka Vishaya," were issued by the Rashtrakuta ruler Krishna I. They mention areas like Bhosari, which is now a part of the modern city. Chinchwad is also a site of religious importance. It houses a shrine for Morya Gosavi, a prominent saint of the Ganapatya denomination.

Records show that construction on his temple began in 1658 CE.

During the British Raj, Pimpri and Chinchwad were small, independent rural settlements. They were located along the banks of the Pavana River. The area is also known as the birthplace of the Chapekar brothers. Damodar, Balkrishna, and Vasudeo Hari Chapekar were involved in an assassination of a British official in 1897.

Following the partition of India in 1947, the area saw significant changes. The government established Pimpri Camp to provide housing for refugees. This area included 1,609 residences built on 203 acres of land.

Industrialization began in earnest with the establishment of Hindustan Antibiotics in 1954. This facility was created with help from the WHO and UNICEF to provide affordable medicine.

India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, inaugurated the factory in 1954. This event triggered massive industrial growth in the Chinchwad, Bhosari, and Pimpri areas. In 1962, the MIDC began acquiring land to provide infrastructure for new businesses. This allowed many national and international automobile companies to set up operations. Today, the city hosts major brands like Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Tata Motors.

The city's population and administration have expanded significantly over time. In 1970, several villages merged to form the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Council. By 1982, this became the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. The city's size more than doubled in 1997 when 18 villages were added to its periphery. As of the 2011 Census, the population was 1,729,692 people. The city is very diverse, with many people speaking Marathi, Hindi, and various other languages. This influx of people is driven by the many job opportunities in the tech and auto sectors.
