It sits within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Geographically, the city lies in the Konkani coastal lowland. This specific region is characterized by its hills and streams. Bhiwandi serves as a vital trade center for the nation. It connects the city of Mumbai to the rest of India via the Mumbai–Agra highway. This location makes it a central hub for moving goods across the country.

The city's economy is built upon three distinct sectors. These primary sectors are textiles, groceries, and services. The service sector includes activities like food delivery, logging, and supplying. Historically, Bhiwandi developed as a major industrial hub for the textile industry. It currently houses the largest number of power looms and handlooms in India. In fact, it possesses the second-largest power loom sector in the country. Only the city of Surat in Gujarat has a larger number of these machines. Most of the local population finds employment within this textile sector.

However, the textile industry has faced significant challenges in recent years. Since 2012, the sector has experienced a notable economic decline. This downturn was partly caused by the sudden enactment of new goods and services taxes. Producers also face difficulties regarding direct market access. Many weavers lack direct contact with their final buyers. Consequently, they must sell their products to middlemen. Most of these middlemen come from Gujarat. These intermediaries often charge significant markup prices on the goods. This process impacts the overall profitability of the local textile workers.

While textiles are important, Bhiwandi has expanded into new industries. The city has become one of Asia's largest warehousing hubs. Its godowns, which are large storage buildings, are considered the largest in Asia. This growth is linked to its proximity to the Nhava Seva port in Mumbai. Mumbai serves as the financial capital of India. Because of this connection, Bhiwandi is a major contributor to the logistics landscape of the nation. Many global e-commerce companies maintain branches in the city. These companies include Amazon, Flipkart, FedEx, and Snapdeal. Other major firms like Delhivery and Reliance Industries also operate there.

The city is also a priority for future urban development. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) views Bhiwandi as its next developed region. The MMRDA has previously managed large projects like the Mumbai Metro and the Monorail Project. They also developed the Bandra–Kurla Complex and the Eastern Freeway. To support this growth, the city is investing in transportation. The Bhiwandi Metro Project, also known as Mumbai Metro line 5, is currently proposed. This new transit system is expected to be completed by 2025. Currently, the central railway station at Anjur Phata provides essential links. This station connects to both the central railways and the Mumbai local train network.

Infrastructure is another critical component of the city's scale. Bhiwandi is home to a massive water treatment plant located at Panjrapur. This facility has a capacity of 455 MLD. This figure represents millions of liters of water per day. Because of this immense capacity, it is one of the largest water treatment plants in Asia. Such large-scale utility projects are necessary to support the growing population and industrial needs. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the city's complex systems continued to function. However, the pandemic did create significant challenges for small hotels in the area.

Managing such a large city requires significant municipal finance. In the 2022–23 financial year, the Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation reported specific revenue figures. The corporation reported total revenue receipts of ₹509 crore, which is approximately US$61 million. During that same period, total expenditure was ₹508 crore, or about US$61 million. Tax revenue accounted for roughly 19.3% of the total revenue collected. The corporation also received ₹331 crore in grants during that financial year. These funds allow the administration to manage the city's many industrial and residential needs.
