Much of the state is part of the National Capital Region. This helps with planning and development for the area.

The state has a very deep history. Ancient sites like Rakhigarhi and Bhirrana belong to the Indus Valley Civilization. These sites show that people used paved roads and drainage systems long ago.

During the Vedic era, the Kuru kingdom was located here. Some believe the name Haryana comes from the Abhira community. They were known for using advanced ways to farm. Historians think the name may have evolved from the word "Abhirayana." This meant the "path" or "way" of the Abhiras.

Many famous leaders and battles shaped this land. In the 7th century, King Harsha ruled from Thanesar. Later, the Tomara dynasty ruled the southern part of the state. The city of Panipat is famous for three very important battles. In 1526, Babur defeated the Lodis there. In 1556, Akbar defeated a local leader named Hem Chandra Vikramaditya.
