The name Chandigarh means "fort of Chandi." This comes from a village where a temple for the goddess Chandi once stood. Today, that temple is located in the nearby district of Panchkula.

Building this city was a very big job. In 1947, India became independent, but the country was divided during the Partition. The old capital of Punjab, Lahore, became part of Pakistan. This left the Indian state of Punjab without a place for its government. Leaders needed a new center that could hold many offices and help people move there.

They chose a site between the Doaba and Ambala districts. This new city was meant to be a symbol of unity and strength for the new nation.

Many smart planners worked to design the city. First, an American planner named Albert Mayer created a fan-shaped plan. He wanted to use ideas from the "Garden City" movement to make it beautiful.

Later, a famous Swiss-French architect named Le Corbusier took over the project. He worked with a team that included Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry. They changed the plan into a grid of many large blocks called sectors. These sectors have their own schools, parks, and shops for the people living there.

Le Corbusier designed the most important buildings in the Capitol Complex.
