Because it is in the mountains, the weather is much cooler than the hot plains below. This cool air made it a very special place for many people. Many visitors come to see the beautiful views and the steep, green hills.

In the past, the city grew in a very specific way.

Before the year 1815, the area was mostly dense forest with only a few small villages. After British forces took control, the settlement began to grow quickly. In 1830, there were only about 30 houses in the area. By 1881, that number had grown to 1,141 houses. The city was built on steep slopes, which shaped how the buildings sit. Some parts of the town are high up on the Ridge, while others sit on lower terraces.

Long before the British arrived, the Jakhu Temple was already there. In 1864, Shimla was named the summer capital of British India. This meant leaders moved their government there to escape the heat. The city hosted many important political meetings, like the Simla Conference in 1945. After India gained independence, Shimla became the capital of Himachal Pradesh in 1971. It has remained a vital political center for many years.

There are many amazing things to see and do in the city today.

People have many different ideas about where the name Shimla comes from.

Kalibari Shimla

One idea is that it comes from the word Shyamalaya, which means "blue house." This might refer to a blue house made of slate on Jakhu Hill. Another idea links the name to the goddess Kali. Some say the name comes from Shamli, which means "blue lady." People believe a temple for this goddess once stood on the hillside. Even today, the city's name and its history make it a wonderful place to explore.
