Many years ago, the British used this place as a summer retreat. They wanted to escape the heat of the Indian plains. In the early 1800s, officials looked at the mountain ridge as a great resort. They leased the land from the Kingdom of Sikkim. Soon, they began building hotels and houses for people to live in.

They also built schools for children. Some of these schools, like St Joseph's, were started in the late 1800s. This helped make the town a busy place for families.

Growing tea changed the hills forever. In 1840, a man named Archibald Campbell began testing tea plants there. The experiment worked very well. Large areas of forest were cleared to make room for tea gardens.

Thousands of workers came from places like Nepal to help. They cleared the woods and worked in the gardens. This work created a new way of life in the mountains. By the turn of the 20th century, there were 100 tea gardens and 64,000 workers.

Travel to the city became much easier with a special train. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway opened in July 1881. It uses a narrow track that is only two feet wide.

This small train climbs high up into the mountains. It used to carry tea out to the rest of the world. In 1999, UNESCO named this railway a World Heritage Site. This means it is a very important place for everyone to protect.

Today, Darjeeling is a place where many different cultures meet. The people have many different customs and delicious foods. However, the growing city faces some hard jobs. The population has grown very fast over the years. This leads to crowded traffic and not enough water for everyone.
