The Teesta River flows along the eastern edge of the city. Siliguri is the third largest urban area in West Bengal. It sits behind the larger cities of Kolkata and Asansol. People often call it the "Gateway of Northeast India." This is because it connects mainland India to the northeast regions.

Being in this location makes Siliguri a very important place for travel. It sits near the international borders of Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. This makes the city a major hub for trading goods.

Many different people move through the city to reach other lands. The city is part of the Siliguri Corridor. This area became very important when Bengal was divided in 1947. Later, Sikkim joined India in 1975, which changed the region too. Many immigrants moved here to find better ways of living. This caused the population to grow very quickly over the years.

Long ago, Siliguri was a small farming village. It was once part of the Kingdom of Sikkim. In 1788, the Kingdom of Nepal captured the area.

Later, the British captured Darjeeling and the nearby Dooars region in 1865. They wanted to grow tea and send it to England. To help move the tea, they built the Siliguri Town railway station. In 1880, they even started a famous toy train to Darjeeling. By 1907, the area had grown into a sub-divisional town. The city has changed a lot since those early days.

Today, Siliguri is a very fast-growing place. It is the largest growing city in eastern India after Guwahati.
