Siliguri has a humid subtropical climate, known scientifically as Cwa. This means the city experiences hot, humid summers and pleasant, warm winters. A severe monsoon season defines much of the weather pattern. About eighty percent of the annual rainfall occurs between June and September. July is the wettest month, while January is the driest.
The history of Siliguri began as a small agricultural village in the Kingdom of Sikkim. In 1788, the Kingdom of Nepal captured the region. This led to the settlement of Kirati and Lepcha people in the area. Later, the Treaty of Sugauli in 1816 between Britain and Nepal changed the region's prospects. It became a vital transit point between the Darjeeling hills and the Nepal mainland. In 1865, the British captured Darjeeling and the Dooars region to establish tea plantations. To export this tea to England, they built the Siliguri Town railway station.

Modern growth was driven by major political and infrastructure changes. The Siliguri Corridor was formed when Bengal was divided in 1947. Later, Sikkim merged with India in 1975. These events brought many immigrants seeking better infrastructure, which increased the population. The city achieved municipal status in 1950. In 1951, the Assam rail link was established with the Siliguri Junction station. By 1961, all stations connected with the broad gauge New Jalpaiguri Junction.

Siliguri is now a massive center for trade and logistics. It is the largest and fastest-growing city in eastern India after Guwahati. The city saw a growth rate of 57.8% between 1971 and 1981. This rapid expansion led to the Integrated Urban Development Project in 1981. A treaty between India and China for trade through the Nathu La Pass has also helped. This has strengthened Siliguri's role as an international transportation hub.

Governance in Siliguri has evolved from small committees to a large corporation. In 1915, a Sanitation Committee was formed to manage waste. By 1994, the municipal council was upgraded to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation. This body manages 47 wards across the Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts. The corporation handles various departments, including public works and sanitation.
