Kolkata is a massive and vital urban center in eastern India.

The city's origins lie in three distinct villages. These were Kalikata, Sutanuti, and Gobindapur. Kalikata was a fishing village with a small merchant factory. Sutanuti was a village for riverside weavers. Gobindapur served as a trading post for Indian merchant princes. These villages were part of an estate owned by the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family of zamindars. The name Kolkata likely comes from the Bengali word Kôlikata. Some believe this refers to the goddess Kali. Others suggest it comes from terms for canals or flat areas.
British involvement changed the area's history significantly. The East India Company received a trading license in 1690. They eventually developed the area into Fort William.
During the British era, Calcutta was a global center. It was the second largest city in the British Empire.

The 20th century brought many difficult transformations. The partition of Bengal in 1905 caused mass protests. In 1947, the partition of India led to massive demographic shifts. Hundreds of thousands of Hindu refugees fled into the city from East Bengal.
Kolkata remains a massive metropolitan area today. The city proper has about 4.5 million people.

The city's culture is very unique and diverse. It features close-knit neighborhoods called paras. People also participate in freestyle conversations known as adda.
