Ancient Bengal was home to several major Janapadas, which are small kingdoms. The region was part of many pan-Indian empires. These include the Vangas, the Mauryans, and the Guptas. The Mauryan Empire, under Ashoka, once extended across much of South Asia. Later, the Pala Empire ruled the region for four hundred years starting in the 8th century.

A major turning point occurred in 1947 during the Partition of Bengal. The Bengal Legislative Council and Assembly voted to divide the region along religious lines. This created two independent dominions. West Bengal became a Hindu-majority Indian state. East Bengal became a Muslim-majority province of Pakistan. This area later became the independent nation of Bangladesh. Following this partition, West Bengal saw many Hindu refugees arriving from East Bengal. This movement of people helped shape the modern politics and landscape of the state.
