History in this region stretches back many thousands of years. Archaeologists have found stone tools dating back 20,000 years. This shows human occupation much earlier than scholars once thought. Ancient Bengal was home to several major Janapadas, which are small kingdoms. The region was part of many pan-Indian empires. These include the Vangas, the Mauryans, and the Guptas.

The Mauryan Empire, under Ashoka, once extended across much of South Asia. Later, the Pala Empire ruled the region for four hundred years starting in the 8th century.

Religion and trade have shaped the culture of West Bengal for centuries. Islam was introduced through trade with the Abbasid Caliphate. Later, the Ghurid conquests led to the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate. This helped the Muslim faith spread across the Bengal region. During the Bengal Sultanate, the territory became a major global trading nation. Europeans even described it as the richest country to trade with.

Calcutta served as the capital for British territories for many years.

A major turning point occurred in 1947 during the Partition of Bengal. The Bengal Legislative Council and Assembly voted to divide the region along religious lines. This created two independent dominions. West Bengal became a Hindu-majority Indian state. East Bengal became a Muslim-majority province of Pakistan. This area later became the independent nation of Bangladesh. Following this partition, West Bengal saw many Hindu refugees arriving from East Bengal. This movement of people helped shape the modern politics and landscape of the state.

West Bengal is famous as an intellectual and artistic center. The period of British administration led to an expansion of Western education. This helped spark the Bengali Renaissance, a time of social and scientific reform. The state has produced many famous figures, such as the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. It is also known for great musicians, filmmakers, and artists.
